Teens
In August 2004, HSAO recognized the need to provide the adolescent population
it serves with the opportunity to have a safe place to hang out, have fun and
foster positive relationships with other teens, while supporting their social
and independent skills development. As a result, Wildcards was formed.
Wildcards is a dynamic and accepting group for teens. The group's unique name
and logo was collectively created by teen members, and was so chosen due to the
fact that they were all different. Various activities and events are scheduled
on a regular basis. Recent Wildcard activities have included volunteer work, a
trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo, Game Night at HSAO, a puppet show performance for
children and a conference presentation at Seven Springs Resort.
Any teen, 14 years and older, involved with HSAO is invited to participate in
the Wildcard events. For more information on membership and how to get involved,
teens or parents can contact their Service Coordinator.
Here is what a few teens have to say about Wildcards: "The reason I
like going to Wildcards events is it's something for me to do. We have fun and
meet new people." - Erica
"Wildcards gives me a chance to get out and do something that keeps
me from being bored all the time. I found out about this teen group through
Shannon, my RC for HSAO." - Marcus
"I like Wildcards because you can learn a lot from it, like how to
connect with each of your peers in the group or even at home. I was excited to
go and meet new people. I like all the staff, too - they really make me
laugh!" - Kayla
